have been choosen for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020 for the development of a method for genome editing by “The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences“.
Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna have discovered one of gene technology’s sharpest tools: the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors. Using these, researchers can change the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with extremely high precision. This technology has had a revolutionary impact on the life sciences, is contributing to new cancer therapies and the dream of curing inherited diseases may come true.
Jennifer A. Doudna was born in Washington, DC and is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
Emmanuelle Charpentier was born in Juvisy-sur-Orge, France and is director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens, Berlin, Germany.
The prize amount of 10 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.1 million dollar) will be shared equally between the two Laureates.
